Sewing Projects and embarrassing photos I had to share

September 28, 2013 By: Chris Lucas16 Comments

Yes, I’ve been busy sewing for my dolls again and loving it!

Ellowyne Wilde is getting a little spoilt and starting to build up a beautiful wardrobe… Well I think so anyway 🙂

Over the last couple of weeks I’ve made Ellowyne two new outfits including a dress and a matching dress and jacket.  She’s a great size doll to sew for, she’s 16″ and is a little smaller than my Australian Girl & American Girl dolls and bigger than my barbie dolls so she’s not quite a fiddly to sew as barbie dolls and best of all she looks great in most designs.

This dress below is the latest creation I’ve made for Ellowyne.  I used a polka dot fabric I had in my stash and lined the bodice with a white cotton also from my stash.

Ellowyne Wilde - wearing dress using Frous Frous pattern

Ellowyne Wilde look oh so pretty in her purple polka dot dress.

For the underskirt I used 5 layers of silk organza and overlocked the edges using a purple thread for a little contrast.  The pattern called for 3 layers of tulle but I didn’t have any on hand and didn’t want to have to order some online and wait for it to arrive… I’m too impatient and wanted it now!

Ellowyne Wilde Showing off her Silk Organza Underskirt

“I don’t normally lift my skirts for anyone but mum said you might like to take a peak at my silk organza underskirt. Make sure there’s no boys looking please.”

And to top it all off I even made Ellowyn a matching hat… how cute is she?

Ellowne Wilde just loves her hat!

The following outfit is one of my favourites.  The dress and jacket are both fully lined.  Again I used fabric I had in my stash which I had planned on making a skirt for myself with but I thought it would look great made up in this outfit for Ellowyne instead.

I think the pearl and diamond necklace goes with this suit perfectly don't you?

To give you an idea of the size of the outfit here’s a picture of the dress along side a ruler.  I almost matched the waist darts perfectly, missed one by a couple of millimetres and when you’re sewing dolls clothes it’s really noticeable… but ah well I don’t think many people are going to get that close to it to be able to notice it.

Geez the promises we make… regretting this one… but ah well it’s all fun when it comes to sewing!

I promised my mother in law that I’d share some pictures of the state of my sewing room as when I told her the state I had got it into I don’t think she believed me and wanted pics.  I took the pictures the day she asked me to and we (hubby & I) were talking to her on the phone last night and she said she was still waiting for the pics I promised.  I told her I would share so here they are… these are for you Kerry these are for you and now for everyone else as well hahahaha

That’s my tailors pressing board sitting on my ironing board and at the end of my ironing board is my clapper and my sleeve ham… I thought I’d tell you that so you focused on those instead of the mess HAHAHAHA!!!  Hope it worked?

This one is of my cutting table.  At the time I was making a hat for my Ellowyne Wilde doll.  She’s the one wearing the purple dress that I had also made for her.  The shirt on the dress form is the shirt I started a couple of months ago for my hubby… yes it’s a work in progress lol.  I just have to add the collar, the buttons, and sew the button holes.  I really should be a good wife and finish the shirt for him but ah well it can wait lol

I think hubby’s shirt looks pretty good on my dress form heeeheee. That’s the collar sitting on the shoulder waiting to be attached.  Hubby tried on the shirt and it fits him perfectly so that’s a plus!

These are my workhorses and where all the action takes place.  I love, love, love my Janome sewing machine and my Babylock Evolution overlocker… both were presents from my wonderful hubby.  How lucky am I?

Love my two workhorses… my Janome sewing machine and Babylock Evolution serger / overlocker.

I can’t believe I’ve just shared these pics showing you how messy my sewing room is.

Ah well it’s out there now and hey… I can’t be the only one who gets there sewing room in such a mess can I?

Oh please tell me I’m not the only one am I??

That’s so good to hear Faye… Yeah I’m not alone lol. Most pictures of sewing rooms you see online are stunning sewing and craft spaces with nothing out of place. If I had a room like that I wouldn’t be game to sew in it hahaha

Hahaha I’ll have to tell my hubby you said that as he can’t believe that I can find anything in there. The funny thing is I know exactly where everything is. I just did a cleanup today so I probably won’t be able to find anything lol. And thank you for the lovely feedback 🙂

Chris, your doll outfits are beautiful. So is this doll. 🙂

I’d say you were brave to show your sewing room but I don’t think it looks that bad. Mine is a royal mess right now. I originally bought my storage furniture for scrapbooking supplies and now I think I need to pack those things up to make more room for my sewing stuff. Your husband is awesome for buying you those two machines; he probably deserves to have his shirt finished. I’d rather sew for my dolls than sew for myself. And “boy” clothes just aren’t as much fun. Nice work!

Thank you and she sure is beautiful. Every time I look at her she makes me smile 🙂

Good to know I’m not the only one with a messy sewing room. I did get in and clean it up today and now I won’t want to mess it up lol

Might be a good idea to pack up some of your scrapbooking supplies if you’re not using them at the moment and have all your sewing supplies nicely organized in your furniture 🙂

You are so right my hubby does deserve his shirt… He keeps telling me it’s the most expensive shirt he’s ever bought and never got lol. Boys clothes definitely aren’t as much fun to sew as dolls clothes unfortunately!

I forgot how pretty doll clothes can actually be…You made me miss playing with my Barbies; my Mama always made sure they stayed dressed “to the 9″….Thanks for the reminder…they are so pretty!…

They sure are pretty and the good thing is you can get as creative as you like and they don’t need much fabric. Glad I was able to take you on a trip down memory lane 🙂

Oh, Elowyn looks lovely in her new frocks! My MIL also makes doll clothes for tonner and Barbie, mostly from films. If you are interested, her website is: http://www.dollfashionsbyalana.com and on Facebook: http://www.facebook.com/dollfashionsbyalana

Do you ever go to tonner events? I went to my first one a few months ago. A luncheon in SF. So fun! Although the dolls are out of my price range. I do have two tonners though, that my MIL gave to me. They are dressed up as my husband and I from our wedding. 🙂

I also love your sewing room! It looks like a fantastic place to make things!

Hi Tanya, I’ve seen your MIL’s work and it’s amazing! How sweet of her to give you 2 dolls 🙂

Unfortunately I haven’t been to a Tonner event as I live in Australia in a remote mining town but sure would love to.

And even though my sewing room is only small and messy I do love working in there…. or should I say playing in there lol

Makes me want to buy a doll to dress up. Great practice. Love the outfit. And my sewing space is worse!

Oh BeaJay I have to warn you that if you buy a doll you may not be able to stop at one. The darn things are a little addictive and also consume your sewing time lol. I’m coming to check out your blog post as you’ve got me curious as to what you’ve been up to…. Mmmm wonder what it is…. heading your way now :)….oh and good to know you too can get your sewing room in a mess as well lol

Oh your doll clothes are so pretty! Love the hat! I got a pattern at my local thrift shop for doll clothes and it is from the 60s! They are for barbie sized dolls I think but the outfits are so cool, and detailed they look like Jackie O. I think your sewing room looks just fine! Mine often looks like hurricane craftermath after a project.

Ok, it is Simplicity 6208. Trying to figure out a way to enlarge the patterns to make them for me! Lol.

Oh I checked out Simplicity 6208 and love version 4 and 2 and could so see you wearing those two outfits…actually I can visualise you in all of them. I’m sure you’d easily be able to adapt a similar pattern to create these styles. Version 2 is like a basic top pattern with a circle skirt added around the hip area… so not too hard to do. You can do it I know you can 🙂 🙂

The darn dolls are getting more sewing attention than me… I’ve turned them into spoilt brats LOL. OH… careful you’re not tempted to buy a barbie doll to test out those patterns hahahaha. There’s some great patterns available for barbie doll clothes and for other dolls too! I’m so glad everyone else tends to get their sewing rooms in a mess as well. I was starting to think I was the only one as I hardly ever see pics of messy sewing rooms… only pics of pretty ones. I suppose we don’t normally show our mess on the http://www... only people like me who make promises they regret lol
