Plus Size Pattern Fitting & Design – I’m sewing Vogue Pattern 8815 a Peplum Top

November 27, 2012 By: Chris Lucascomment

Well my pattern arrived in the mail today for my Plus Size Pattern Fitting & Design class with Barbara Deckert on Craftsy.com

I’ve watched all the videos in the Plus Size Pattern Fitting & Design class in anticipation so as I can sink my little sewing fingers in and get started on making up my first Peplum Top… which seem to be quite popular now and I’m seeing them everywhere online.  So it’s definitely about time I made one of my own and to see if this design actually suits me or not.

Another plus is it’s the first time I’ll be sewing with such slippery fabric in probably around 20 years. Many years ago I use to sew all my own clothes… both out of necessity and but mainly out of my love of sewing.  Over the last several months I’ve found my love for sewing yet once again and thanks to the online world there are so many wonderful sources of inspiration and information to help get our creativity flowing yet once again.

Anyway… as you can tell I easily get sidetracked and go off on another path and share bit and pieces of my life along the way… at least it give you an opportunity to find out more about me along the way.

So… back to my Plus Size Pattern Fitting & Design Class with Barbara.

Here’s the pattern I’ve been waiting for.

It’s a Vogue Very Easy Pattern V8815 size F5 (16-18-20-22-24).

Plus Size Pattern Fitting

So as you can see it’s a simple pattern with simple lines… now the trick is to make it fit and that’s where Barbara’s class on Craftsy.com will come in.  I plan on sewing along with Barbara and working on sizing this pattern to my measurements with the ultimate outcome being that I have a top that fits me perfectly.  I’ll make up a wearable muslin first out of some fabric I have in my stash that I’m not that fussed on as when it arrived it wasn’t quite as nice as I thought it was when I saw it online.  And then if I like the style I can then purchase some more fabric and make another top… possibly with some of the design options Barbara shares in her class.

Here’s a picture of the fabric I’m using which I purchase some time ago from Fabric.com I think by memory I paid around $9.00 or $10 for it.

I do like the colors in this fabric but it kind of reminds me of Pajamas…. oh well it feels silky and soft and you just never know it might just turn out to be quite alright.

If you’d like to find out more about Barbara’s and her Plus Size Pattern Fitting & Design class that I’m following along with on Craftsy you can watch Barbara’s videos below.

Don’t worry I don’t work for Craftsy and it’s not an affiliate link… I just wanted to share in case you might be interested.

By the way Barbara shares so many great tips in this class and they’re not just focused on plus size sewing either… anyone who sews and wants to improve upon their sewing skill will also find Barbara’s class very helpful as she shares quite a lot of tips and the video classes are great 🙂

Here’s a couple of tips that Barbara shares in her class

I’ll keep you posted on how this top progresses along.  And I’ll share any tips that might be helpful as I go… especially my bloopers as there’s bound to be some of those along the way.
